Emergent Genetics Inc. was a seed and related
biotechnology company with operations in the
U.S., Europe and India and had a strategic
product focus on cotton, rice, wheat and
vegetables. As such it was one of the world's
leaders in the application of new technologies
for development of cotton seed that is resistant
to insects and herbicides. Emergent Genetics,
Inc. marketed its products in various markets
under its highly regarded brands names.
In India, Emergent sold products under the
brands of Paras and Mahendra and was one of the
largest and most profitable hybrid seed
companies in India, with particular strength in
cotton, sorghum and pearl millet. It was
technology-driven, offering high quality,
value-added research products and services to
increase the productivity and profitability of
Indian farmers, improve quality of food, and
bring stability in farming systems with specific
focus on resource poor marginal farmers and thus
support India in its efforts towards achieving
sustainable agriculture.
In the United States, Emergent sold Stoneville
Pedigreed and NexGen brand seed and was the
second largest commercial breeder, producer and
marketer of elite cotton varieties sold as
planting seed to cotton growers. Stoneville was
recognized worldwide for its high quality
products and for its contributions to the cotton
industry. Emergent's business included research
and/or production facilities across 14 U.S.
states.
Internationally, Emergent maintained a
leadership position in cotton with operations in
Spain, Greece and Turkey. Emergent was also a
market leader in the vegetable seed sectors in
Scandinavia and developing markets such as
India, Spain and Latin America.
Emergent Genetics, Inc. was acquired by Monsanto
Company on April 5, 2005. .
