Emergent Genetics is consolidating its Indian operations by merging its two associate companies. Emergent Genetics India Pvt Ltd (formerly known as Paras Extra Growth Seeds Ltd), which was acquired from Hindustan Lever (HLL) in 2002 and Mahendra Hybrid Seeds which was acquired in 2000. The two operating entities will be merged together to increase operational efficiencies. The proposal is to merge Mahendra into Emergent Genetics India.

The Hyderabad-based company has filed the scheme of arrangement for merger with the Mumbai High Court on 8th June. The total legal process may take about six months.

While Emergent Genetics India has a strong presence in the Cotton hybrid seeds market and an extensive national distribution network, Mahendra Hybrid Seeds, has a strong position in Pearl Millet and Sorghum. The group is also active in other crops like Maize and Sunflower. The group also markets the Vegetables seeds of their sister company Daehnfeldt, in India.

The two brands under which the group operates in India, PARAS and MAHALAXMI, have a very strong equity among the farmers and the trade. The group is known to offer products of high genetic potential, high quality and innovative packaging.

The combined entity will have a turnover of about 25M$. The merger is expected to create a better platform for financial restructuring and research synergies. The company is planning to consolidate its seed and biotech research activities.

Emergent Genetics is also planning to enter into the bio-technology segment in a major way. Emergent Genetics is a licensee of Monsanto for their Bt gene. Considerable investment has been made by the Company in the last two years in setting up biotech research facilities and quality assurance facilities required for both transgenic and non-transgenic crops. Modernization and automation of processing plants and branding are the other areas where the Company has invested money in the last one year.
